FILA & GELE( CAP & HEADGEAR)

Cap and headgear are popularly known in the western part of Nigeria as Fila and Gele respectively. It's usually worn to occasions such as weddings, naming ceremonies and house warming etc.

In this piece let’s take a look at how Cap and Headgear make ones dressing fully complete...

Fashion is all about versatility and sometimes, it’s the little things such as the traditional headgear and cap that count in both women and men’s wardrobe.
Traditionally, it is expected of men and women who wear native outfit, usually Iro and Buba for female; Buba, Sokoto and Agbada for male to adorn it with cap and headgear- FILA and GELE.
Most folks from the Yoruba origin believe in this fashion trend and they go all out for it. Also, a lot of people can’t do without it especially the ladies, and trust me, men are fast catching the buzz proudly using their Fila to occasions, work place (mostly Fridays) since it’s a dress-down day, and to other important places.
The good thing is both men and women are going extra mile to standout in their Fila and Gele, not leaving children out of it.

ANKARA FABRICS

Nigerian women, particularly those from the south west love the ankara fabric. no wonder they have successfully turned it into a must-use at ceremonies and truth be told, it has become their unique identity.
it is therefore not uncommon these days to see women from that part of the country clad in ankara with styles of various designs both local and foreigns.
Ankara usually has vibrant patterns of very rich colourful designs and it is mostly made of 100% cotton or cotton poly materials.
It is primarily made in Ghana and presently it has a strong cultural, social and economic importance in that region.
The cotton fabric used for Ankara is cool and durable. The fabric is also worn as uniform which is popularly called ASO EBI, a phrase by the Yoruba tribe for family cloth. This custom has become a trend in Nigeria as people from the same family along with their group of friends wear it at occasions.
Ankara has moved from individual’s wardrobes to fashion designers’hands where they creatively put out inspiring designs on the run-way. lt has become everyday wear for their clients, also evolved from its original usage which is clothing to Shoes, Bags , Hair accessories, earrings, neck piece etc.
There are different types of Ankara; HOLLADIS/DUCTH WAX, which is made in Holland; KENTE made in Ghana, NIGERIA WAX made in Nigeria. There are also LONDON WAX, METALLIC WAX,AFRICAN PRINT, SUPER JAVA,WOODIN, AKONSONBO WAX and others.
